Sony Introduces PlayStation Portal: A Remote Play Device for PS5

August 24, 2023 by our News Team

Sony has launched the PlayStation Portal, a dedicated remote play companion device for the PS5 that boasts an eight-inch, 1080p LCD display, built-in DualSense-like controllers, and PlayStation Link wireless audio technology, offering gamers a seamless portable gaming experience with minimal latency.

  • The PlayStation Portal boasts an eight-inch, 1080p LCD display and can stream games at up to 60fps.
  • The device features the PlayStation 5's home screen, complete with a dedicated section for media playback.
  • The PlayStation Portal exhibits minimal latency during gameplay.

Sony has had its fair share of successes and failures in the handheld game console market, but one standout feature that has garnered praise is their local game streaming support known as Remote Play. This feature allows players to remotely access and play games from their PS3, PS4, or PS5 consoles on handheld devices like the Playstation Portable and PS Vita. Despite no longer producing dedicated gaming handhelds, Sony is still keen on utilizing remote play capabilities to offer new experiences and sell new hardware. This week, they launched their latest offering – the PlayStation Portal, a dedicated remote play companion device for the PS5.

The PlayStation Portal is specifically designed to enhance portable gaming experiences for Playstation 5 owners. It boasts an eight-inch, 1080p LCD display and can stream games at up to 60fps. While it has its own system-on-chip and operating system, the Portal cannot run games independently and relies on Wi-Fi connectivity to enable remote play on a PS5.

To ensure a seamless gaming experience, the PlayStation Portal comes equipped with controllers that closely resemble the design and functionality of the PS5’s DualSense controllers. These built-in controllers offer familiar haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Additionally, the device features the PlayStation 5’s home screen, complete with a dedicated section for media playback.

One concern that arises with remote gaming devices is Latency. However, a review from IGN has demonstrated that the PlayStation Portal exhibits minimal latency during gameplay.

It’s worth noting that the PlayStation Portal will not be compatible with Sony’s upcoming cloud streaming service for PS5 titles, as reported by The Verge. This means that the handheld can only stream games that are already installed on a user’s PS5 console and nowhere else.

Sony has made an interesting decision regarding audio capabilities for the Portal. Instead of supporting Bluetooth audio, the handheld utilizes Sony’s proprietary PlayStation Link wireless technology, which promises lossless, lag-free audio. As a result, the device is not compatible with existing wireless headsets from popular brands like Apple, Beats, Samsung, and even Sony itself. To enjoy wireless audio, gamers will need to use Sony’s new wireless headphones and earbuds, the first audio devices to support PlayStation Link. However, for those who prefer wired audio, the device includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.

While many details about the PlayStation Portal have been revealed, Sony has yet to disclose certain specifications, such as the expected battery life. However, indications suggest that Sony is targeting a battery duration similar to its DualSense controller, which typically lasts around seven to nine hours. Although a public launch date has not been announced, Sony has assured that the Portal will be released “later this year.”
